Your Skin & Sugar

Here are some tell-tale ways sugar affects skin:

  • Sugar attacks collagen. It basically DESTROYS the protein that maintains skin elasticity. This makes the skin age faster, more prone to wrinkles and keeps my fractional laser machine working overtime to push healthy collagen to the epidermal layers.

  •  Sugar ranks high on the acidity scale.  This means there is a direct link between sugar and inflammation. If you have acne prone skin, excess sugar in your diet means what would have been subtle acne will be more likely be more inflamed, noticeable and unmanageable.

  • A high sugar diet causes the body to develop a resistance to insulin. This can eventually lead to diabetes. It can also lead to excess hair growth on the face and neck.

  • A high rate of insulin resistance is also linked to acne – specifically, hormonal acne. When the body is resisting insulin, the body needs to try to produce more to compensate. Whilst this is happening, it simultaneously produces hormones. Hormones increase sebum (oil) production. Add that with the inflammation sugar causes an you’ve created the perfect conditions for large, sore, inflamed acne.

When I assess someone’s skin I can usually tell straight away if a high sugar diet has caused any of the problems.

Remember, healthy skin starts from the inside.
